Cabin Finds New Home On Clay County Fairgrounds

November 23, 2014

(Spencer)– Area conservation groups and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources have a new home at the Clay County Fairgrounds.

District three conservation boards and the D-N-R have moved a massive log cabin from Albert City to the fairgrounds in Spencer.

Clay County Conservation Director Dan Heissel says the building was received as a donation from the Sunholm family near Albert City. He says they requested the building be used for environmental purposes.

Heissel says the conservation boards came up with 20-thousand dollars and the fair board 12,500-dollars to move the building.

Heissel says they’re working hard to get the building open by the time the fair starts. He says fairgoers will be able to attend some environmental programs that will be presented by area naturalists.

Heissel says they plan to do some extensive landscaping around the building…complete with a small wetland, stream, and a small pond along with areas for wildlife and wildflowers. He says that work won’t get done until sometime next year.

Environmental programs will run each day of this year’s Clay County Fair from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The Clay County Conservation Board is accepting donations to help with landscaping and construction costs. Anyone who would like to help should call 262-2187.
