(Spirit Lake)– There is now a documented case of West Nile Virus in a human being in Dickinson county.
That word Tuesday from Kevin Teale of the Iowa Department of Public Health. Teale says they can’t release any details due to medical confidentiality laws.
Teale says the latest case in Dickinson county brings the total number of Iowans infected with West Nile so far this season to 15. He says 64 counties have shown some form of West Nile Virus, and he suspects it’s in all 99 counties.
Teale says it once again points out the importance of people taking the necessary precautions. You should use a mosquito repellant containing Deet; wear long-sleeve shirts and pants; and limit outdoor exposure…especially at dawn and dusk…times when mosquitos are most active. Homeowners are encouraged to get rid of any standing water.
Positive human cases of West Nile have also been reported in Lyon and Sioux counties in northwest Iowa.
