Spencer City Councilman Speaks Out On SILO Election

November 23, 2014

(Spencer)– A Spencer city councilman is making his feelings known on the upcoming election on the School Infrastructure Local Option tax in Clay county.

It wasn’t on the agenda for Monday’s council meeting, but Councilman Jim Roling brought up the issue anyway. He expressed concern over the proposal, siting an agreement made five years ago between the city of Spencer and the Spencer school district, when the city was trying to pass a Local Option Sales Tax. The tax passed, and the agreement included a stipulation that if the city gave the school district 25 percent of the revenue from the Local Option Tax, the school district would not go after a one cent sales tax of it’s own.

Roling indicated the school should give up their 25 percent of the Local Option Tax, stating the city could use the extra revenue.

As it stands right now, Spencer gets 65 percent of the revenue, 25 percent goes to the school district, and 10 percent goes to the Clay County Fair Board.

The other council members and Mayor Cleber Meyer had nothing to say in response to Rolings’ comments.
