Dickinson Landfill Commission Hears Requests For Additional Hours At Greenwaste Site

November 22, 2014

(Arnolds Park)– The Dickinson County Landfill Commission Thursday heard a request for longer hours at the recently opened green waste/composting site east of Milford. If that isn’t possible, Jerry Hagberg of Rainbow Tree Service said he’d like to have a key to the facility.

Responding to the request, commissioner Brian Reed of Milford said it’s vital there be tight controls over the site, which is supervised whenever it’s open to the public. Reed says the supervision is a must to make sure nothing illegal gets dumped there.

John Walters of the Dickinson County Conservation Board, which operates the site for the commission, said if yard services, tree trimming firms and others would dump at the site instead of doing it illegally elsewhere, that they could afford to keep the site open longer hours.

Hagberg also questioned the process used to start up the greenwaste site. Commissioner Ron Walker of Arnolds Park said the action was taken after the D-N-R shut down one site several cities had been hauling to, and was threatening to close another. Walker denied allegations from Hagberg that the landfill commission orchestrated the closure.

After further discussion, the commissioners made clear their intent NOT to give any keys to the site to commercial haulers. They did say they’d be willing to look at expanded hours if more of a demand surfaces.

The green waste and compost site east of Milford has been open to the public three days a week since June.
