Milford Council Asked To Restrict On-Street Parking Near School

November 22, 2014

(Milford)– Parking near the high school was a topic of discussion at Monday’s Milford city council meeting.

Don Brinkley lives near the high school. He again expressed his opposition to the location of a new gym being built onto the Okoboji high school, saying it’s exasperating parking problems. Brinkley says vehicles parking on both sides of the streets near the school are causing safety concerns.

The city’s Street Superintendent expressed concern it could also cause problems with snow removal this winter.

Brinkley pleaded with the council to adopt some on-street parking restrictions near the high school. He suggested the parking on “H” and “J” Avenues and the adjoining side streets of 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th be restricted to residents with permits only. He recommended the perimeter of Florence Park be restricted to two-hour parking, even during weekends and the summer. Brinkley says the on-street restrictions would force school kids and those attending school functions to park in parking lots. Brinkley adds that any need for additional parking should be the responsibility of the school, not the city or neighbors.

The council directed city staff to review the various options to address the problem and report back with recommendations.
