SL Fire Chief: Ban On Burning Includes ALL Types of Fires

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– One Dickinson county fire district is making the burning ban all-inclusive.

Spirit Lake Fire Chief Wally Jorgenson says the burning ban currently in effect in Dickinson county pertains specifically to open fires. Under Iowa Code, the State Fire Marshall does not have the authority to prohibit the use of outdoor fireplaces, barbecue grills, properly supervised dumping grounds, or the burning of trash in incinerators or trash burners made of metal, concrete masonry, or heavy one-inch wire mesh with no openings greater than one square inch.

Jorgenson says the State Fire Marshall’s Office told him local officials can make the ban more inclusive if they so wish. As a result, Jorgenson says they’ve opted to ban ALL types of burning in the Spirit Lake fire district, which includes the city of Spirit Lake, until further notice.

The ban on OPEN burning remains in effect countywide.

Open burning has also been banned until further notice in Clay and O’Brien counties.
