SL School Board Eyes More Budget Cuts

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– More tough choices lie ahead for the Spirit Lake schools.

Superintedent Tim Grieves told the school board Monday based on current projections from the state, the district will need to cut between 150-thousand and 200-thousand dollars from its budget in the 2004-2005 school year.

The board directed Grieves and administration to draw up a list of priorities of things they’d like to keep. The list is to be presented to the board at it’s regular meeting next month.

Grieves says the board could look at a three-level system when deciding where to make cuts. The first would include things like reducing transportation costs, reviewing efficiencies of outside agreements and increasing facility rental fees. The second level would look at reducing programs without laying off personnel; and the third would be to eliminate programs AND personnel.

Grieves cautioned the board depending on what the state does, the district may need to look at cutting even more than the 150-thousand to 200-thousand dollars that’s currently projected.
