Testimony Gets Underway In Duncan Murder Trial

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– Testimony got underway Wednesday in a murder trial in Spencer.

71-year-old Harold Duncan is accused of shooting his wife in their Spencer mobile home, then turning the gun on himself in an unsuccessful suicide attempt.

Wednesday’s proceedings got underway with opening statements, with the prosecution telling the 14 jurors about several witnesses they planned to call to the stand. They also told the jury they’ll prove that Harold Duncan shot his wife Karen with the intent to kill her.

During their opening statements, the defense outlined the events of January 13th, 2003 and told the jurors they’ll offer evidence that Harold Duncan shot his wife in self defense after she shot him in the face during an argument.

Wednesday’s testimony included eight witnesses for the prosecution along with a co-worker of Kay, two women who had seen Kay very upset the Friday before she was killed, the two Spencer police officers that were first on the scene, and four special agents with the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation that were involved with the crime scene investigation from the very beginning.

Testimony resumes today (Thursday) with the defense presenting their case.
