(Spencer)– The fifth time was the charm for Clay county supervisors who passed a county-wide nuisance ordinance Tuesday.
The action came on the heels of a fifth public hearing on the proposed ordinance that drew a crowd of concerned residents.
The ordinance gives Public Health Director Tammy McKeever more control over nuisances in the county. The ordinance does not include agriculture-related problems, and will be implemented on a complaint-only basis.
Assistant Clay County Attorney Mike Houchins says it will give McKeever the ability to confer with the county’s Public Health Board and his office whenever a suspected violation is being looked into. Houchins added the ordinance includes provisions under which violators could appeal.
McKeever says the ordinance is primarily intended to clean-up illegal junkyards. She says the ordinance will give her more authority in getting the matters resolved.
The supervisors voted four-to-nothing to adopt the ordinance. Supervisor Sylvia Schoer abstained, siting a possible conflict of interest because she serves on the County Health Board.
