More Than 6,000 Head Of Hogs Perish In Clay Co. Fire

November 22, 2014

(Fostoria)– A fire south of Eaton Corporation in Clay county Saturday night destroyed a hog confinement and its contents, including 6,600 head of hogs.

Fostoria fire crews were called to the scene at 3570 200th Avenue around 7:00 p.m. to find the confinement totally engulfed in flames.

Fostoria Fire Captain Scott Dodge says they quickly called the Spencer, Royal, Everly and Dickens Fire Departments to help haul water. They also worked to control the fire and prevent it from spreading to a nearby structure filled with hay bales. Dodge says the high wind added to their concern of the blaze spreading.

The confinement building, owned by Vern Oberding, was a total loss. In addition to the hogs that were killed, a tractor and camper that were stored in the building were destroyed.

Firefighters were on the scene about 12 hours.

The cause of the blaze is being investigated by the State Fire Marshal.
