Two-Vehicle Crash Results In Multiple Injuries

(Spencer)– Multiple injuries were reported in a two-vehicle collision Sunday evening at the intersections of Highway 18 and 71, or the north “Y” on the north edge of Spencer.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office says 47-year-old Russell Osterkamp of Hawarden was turning westbound onto Highway 18 when he turned into the path of a vehicle driven by 49-year-old Htoo Baw of Storm Lake who was southbound on Highway 71.

Baw was taken by ambulance to Spencer Hospital with abdominal injuries.

Two adult passengers in Baw’s vehicle, Ta Taw Tew and Manyo Win were also taken by ambulance to Spencer Hospital with abdominal and leg injuries and a broken wrist.

Four children in Baw’s vehicle were seriously injured and were life-flighted out. They include Si Si Poe, who sustained internal and abdominal injuries; Tha Dah Wah, who sustained a shoulder injury; Ka Paw Shee who suffered a broken pelvis and leg; and Mu Paw who sustained an internal injury.

Osterkamp was taken to the hospital by a family member to be checked over for some minor injuries.

Severe damage was reported to a 2009 Toyota Tundra pickup driven by Osterkamp; a 1997 Dodge Caravan driven by Baw was totaled.

Osterkamp was cited for failure to yield.

The collision took place shortly before 8:30 p.m.
