SL School Bd. Reviews Long Term Facility Needs; Hears Enrollment Report

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake school board Monday evening approved changeorders for the gym and Sami Center projects at the high school.

The changeorder for the gym amounts to slightly more than 19-thousand dollars. It was reported that project is substantially complete with a few exceptions, including some structural steel that may have to be re-painted.

The changeorder for the auditorium amounts to 2,645-dollars for some additional roof drains and relocating some steel studs.

That leaves slightly less than 167-thousand dollars in the project’s contingency fund. Architect Steve Miller says he’s comfortable with that.

The board also reviewed some possible building projects for the next 10 years or so. Among those is one Superintendent Tim Grieves says shoudl be made a priority…either replacing the smaller wind turbine with a large one or adding a third turbine. Grieves says with the recent additions and new facilities, the district is once again using more electricity than it’s producing. The board took no action regarding the list of proposed projects, which includes things such as a bus barn. They’ll continue to review and prioritize the list in the future.

Grieves also gave an update on enrollment. While the official deadline to report to the state isn’t until this Friday, Grieves says it’s likely the Spirit Lake School District will have an additional 31 students living in it this school year. But he says the number of students the district actually serves increased by less than one percent…or remained nearly steady.
