Clay County Crash Claims Three Lives

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– A fiery crash in Clay county Sunday night claimed three lives.

The Iowa State Patrol says 81-year-old Leland Boblit of Ruthven was driving a 1993 Buick Regal eastbound on Highway 18 at Dickens when he struck a guard rail at a bridge approach. Authorities say Boblit’s vehicle then crossed the center line and collided with an oncoming 2000 Chevrolet Blazer driven by 67-year-old Jim McMichael of Spencer. The vehicle Boblit was driving then caught fire.

Boblit and McMichael, along with a passenger in McMichael’s vehicle, 60-year-old Donna McMichael of Spencer, were all taken by ambulance to Spencer Hospital where they were pronounced dead.

The mishap took place around 7:40 p.m. Sunday.

The Iowa State Patrol was assisted by the Clay and Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Offices, Dickens Fire and Rescue and the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
