SL Council Adopts Revised Ordinances; Approves Towne Center Plat

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake city council Tuesday adopted ordinances requiring storm water management on individual lots when zoning compliance permits are issued and for new subdivisions. The council took the action following a third public hearing that drew comments from those in favor of the changes.

Another ordinance revision that was adopted pertains to the city’s architectural standards. It’s intended to make them less ambiguous.

In other business, the council approved entering into an agreement with the Howard R. Green engineering firm to review the city’s water rates. The study will cost seven thousand dollars. City Administrator Mark Stevens says the new water tower and upgrades to the water treatment plant have resulted in the need for the city to revisit its water rates.

The council approved a voluntary annexation of land on the southeast side of the corner of 28th Street and Sunner Avenue into the city. The matter now goes to the City Development Board in Des Moines.

The council set December 11th as the date for a public hearing on a budget amendment; and they approved a preliminary plat for the Lakes Towne Center project pending a favorable review by an outside engineer that’s also reviewing Drainage District 22, and that it be approved by the DD 22 trustees, which consists of the city council.

The council also heard a request for increased funding for the Airport Authority…to the tune of 1,500-dollars a month. The council agreed to take the request under consideration at budget time. John Kragt, the city’s representative on the Airport Authority, says the additional funding is needed to help keep the airport in Okoboji functional and safe.
