(Undated)—Interstate Power and Light Company, a subsidiary of Alliant Energy, is reminding customers of a new scam that’s making the rounds.
Company officials say a scam artist claiming to be a representative of Alliant Energy has been calling small business customers and claiming that the customer is past due on paying their energy bill. Customers are asked to pay up by providing their credit card information. The scam artists claim that if the customer refuses to provide the information, their electric service will be shut off.
Scam artists may also attempt to convince unsuspecting customers they can also make a utility payment by providing their bank routing numbers and account information.
Alliant Energy officials say customers should only use authorized methods and legitimate banking information to pay their bills, and that credit card numbers and any personal information should not be provided to suspicious callers. Anyone getting such a call should call Alliant Energy at 1-800-ALLIANT to confirm whether the call was actually from Alliant Energy.
Alliant Energy officials say a representative of the company may contact customers to make arrangements on past due accounts, but they do NOT ask customers to provide credit card or bank account information over the phone or through email.
Any suspicious calls should be reported to law enforcement.
