SL Police Receive Complaints Of Snowmobiles Being Operated Without Permission On Private Property

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Snowmobiles being operated where they aren’t supposed to be is causing issues in the city of Spirit Lake.

Police Chief Jeff Hanson tells KUOO news his department has been swamped with complaints recently of the machines being operated on private property without permission…(click here for comment.) “Yeah, that is correct. We have received numerous complaints of snowmobiles operating on private property causing damage and other problems. I just want to remind everybody that snowmobiles shall be operated upon only the traveled portion of the streets. If they’re within any city park a snowmobile shall be operated only upon the areas marked as trails and designated areas for the purpose of snowmobile travel. So basically if you’re beyond the curb with a snowmobile you’re considered to be on someone else’s private property and can be cited for such. So they need to stay on the roadway and they need to be over to the far right hand side of the road, basically the same as an automobile. And for snowmobile operation within the city, there is no operations between 11:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. unless it’s for an emergency situation.”

Hanson says officers will actively enforce the ordinance and violators will be cited.
