Work On Next Phase Of Clay County Connector Trail About To Get Underway

October 21, 2026

(Spirit Lake)– The Dickinson County Board of Supervisors Tuesday approved a contract and bond allowing some work to get underway on another sector of recreational trail south of Milford that will connect with Clay county. Erin Reed of the Dickinson County Trails Board says this is for the second phase of that project…

“We had a bidletting back in September and now we’re ready to move forward with construction. Planning to start here in the next week or two. This is a two mile phase, it’s the middle section of the connection to Clay county. We will have another bidletting in the spring for the last mile and get it wrapped up and get connected to Clay county in 2027.”

Reed says discussions continue on a possible crossing of Highway 71 on the south edge of Milford, below the hill…

“We’re looking at our options as far as a crossing at 230th Street. I know that’s been an issue for us but we’ve been left with a number of options as far as that goes. We’re considering a tunnel and we’re also in conversations with the city of Milford as far as sending it up the west side to 6th Street so we have that connection to downtown. The D.O.T’s coming in with a sidewalk project through that corridor so that will be an opportunity for us to work with them and create a route right into downtown, which is what we want people to do, is visit Milford’s downtown.”

Reed says Tuesday’s action will allow some grading work to get underway yet this fall for the second phase of the Clay County Connector Trail, with crews coming back in the spring to do the paving.
