Weekly Speaker Series Resumes At Lakeside Lab; Training Set For CLAMP

May 21, 2026

(Wahpeton)– The Iowa Lakeside Lab is owned by the state of Iowa and operated through the Board of Regents. They seek to provide science classes and research opportunities for university students but the also want to educate the public. Dr. Mary Skopec, Executive Director of Lakeside Lab says the Tuesday speaker series is a great place to start…

“We will have speakers talking about all kinds of fun things, everything from musical guests that are coming to learning about grey foxes to learning about diatoms, and just really encourage people to come out and learn a little bit about science.”

The Tuesday Speaker Series is held at 7:00 every Tuesday at Mahn Hall. Dr. Skopec says Wild Wednesdays is another great opportunity for learning…

“On Wednesdays starting in June, we have our wild Wednesdays at five p m and those are kid friendly, family friendly events where you can, you know, bring the kids, bring the grandkids, come out and learn about a various nature topic with our interns.”

Dr. Skopec says you can also help by volunteering or the CLAMP program…

“We have people out there that have been helping us with our Clamp program. So that’s the Cooperative Lake Area Monitoring project, and that’s where we have volunteers go out essentially every other week. They get scheduled to go out and collect samples of lake water, and then that comes back to the lab to be analyzed. So we are doing trainings, um, next week if people are interested in learning how to become a clamp volunteer, we encourage you to come out and do that.”

You can become a CLAMP volunteer by attending one of two training sessions. The first will be on Tuesday May 26th at 10:00 and then on Thursday May 28th at 6:00 pm.

You can also tune in to KUOO every Monday at 3:45 for the Lakeside Science Minute where you can hear a preview from the featured speaker for the Tuesday Speaker Series.
