(Wahpeton)– Lakes area protective associations and the Iowa Great Lakes Water Safety Council are stepping up their battle to keep invasive aquatic species such as zebra mussels and eurasian watermilfoil from getting into the Iowa Great Lakes.
Phil Peterson of the Water Safety Council says an infestation of zebra mussels in Clear Lake is getting worse and that it should serve as a wake-up call to the Iowa Great Lakes.
Peterson says they want to step up inspections at boat ramps during the busier weekends this summer, and they’re calling for volunteers to help out.
Peterson says they’ll be holding training sessions for anyone interested in becoming a volunteer inspector this Saturday, May 10th at 1:00 p.m. in the Waitt lab at Lakeside Lab on the west side of West Lake Okoboji.
Another session is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. Saturday, May 31st at the Arnolds Park city hall.
