Veldman Breaks Record in Indians Win, Pioneers Fall Late on the Road (Girls Basketball RoundUp)

A historic night for Spirit Lake sophomore KJ Veldman led to a seventh consecutive victory for the Indians, turning away the Storm Lake Tornadoes 48-30 Tuesday in a Lakes Conference battle. Veldman recorded a double-double of 27 points and twelve steals, setting a new school record for steals in the process. She also pulled down seven rebounds and connected on 5-of-7 shots from beyond the arc. Spirit Lake heads to Cherokee on Friday with an 8-2 record in league play and within a game of first place Estherville-Lincoln Central, which lost for the first time in Lakes Conference play, 39-35 at Spencer.

Emmetsburg needed overtime to get a third Lakes Conference victory, defeating LeMars 47-43. Paige Naig finished with a game-high 22 points. The E-Hawks limited LeMars to just two points in the extra session.

Okoboji had chances down the stretch to grab their second Siouxland Conference victory, but ultimately succumbed to a 51-48 defeat at Sheldon last night. Taylor Poppema turned in a 16-point effort, while Paisley Jones had 15 points and twelve rebounds for the Pioneers. Alexis Bart recorded eleven points to lead the Orabs. Okoboji is now 4-13 overall and 1-12 in the conference with a trip to Central Lyon up next.
