(Undated)– Nearly 39 million motorists are hitting the roads over the long, Memorial Day weekend.
While gas prices are up by about 75 cents a gallon across the Midwest compared to a month ago, Nick Jarmusz of Triple-A Midwest says prices spiked higher in 2022 after Russia invaded Ukraine…
“It peaked in the summer around June of that year at the all time record high of over five dollars a gallon nationwide, and that still did not discourage people from increasing their travel year-over-year.”
Jarmusz adds, though, this year will likely mark the smallest, year-over-year increase in Memorial Day travel…
“It’s not just the gas prices themselves, it’s the larger economic picture. Do people feel like they have the economic security to spend what is necessary to travel.”
He says overall inflation is also likely to have an impact.
