(Des Moines)– The state has filed six lawsuits to enforce Iowa’s environmental regulations for underground storage tanks.
The lawsuits were filed against tank owners in Clay, Crawford, Guthrie, Scott, Sioux and Story counties.
The State Environmental Commission forwarded the cases to the Attorney General’s Office after the tank owners didn’t respond to notices from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
The lawsuits ask the courts to stop further violations and to issue more penalties.
The Attorney General’s Office said more than eight thousand regulated underground storage tanks are buried througout Iowa. If handled improperly, the tanks can leak and contaminate groundwater.
