(Spirit Lake)– Discussion of a new water tower to replace the one near the high school was a highlight of Tuesday’s Spirit Lake city council meeting.
The council approved a recommendation from the city’s Utility Commission and an engineer to go with a one and-a-half million gallon tank at an estimated cost of 2.2 million dollars. The city is applying for funding through a state program to help defray some of the cost. Mark Hardy of Howard R. Green, the engineer that’s overseeing the project, told the council they’ll hold off on final designs until they know for sure whether the funding has been approved.
The tower is proposed to be built in the area of 36th Street and Hill Avenue.
In other business, the Concrete Paving Association presented the city a first place award in the State of Iowa Trails Division for the East Entryway project; they set May 10th at 2:00 p.m. as the date to receive bids on the Gilbert Park shelter house project; approved a joint agreement with Dickinson county for an urban renewal plan to assist in the relocating of Ferguson Manufacturing; and the council unanimously adopted an ordinance banning the smoking of any tobacco product at the Little League fields and park at 23rd Street and Erie Avenue.
