(Lakefield, Mn.)– The harvest continues at a very rapid pace, with most of the soybeans in the region now out. Jim Nesseth of Extended Ag Services in Lakefield says what’s even more amazing is the fact that happened in only about a week or so.
On another positive note, Nesseth says yields, with some exceptions to our west, are better than expected…
“Some of our customers to the west of us where it was considerably drier there was some high 30’s low 40’s there for yields but as we moved east some of these yields got into the 50’s and 60’s and quite frankly some producers I think are going to come with some yields that are going to average in the 70’s. It’s really surprising and amazing the yields that we’ve got.”
Nesseth says the same warm, dry conditions that resulted in the rapid soybean harvest, is also good news for the corn, as it starts to come out of the fields…
“It really dried down that corn, so a lot of 14, 15 percent corn that’s coming out right now and so it’s going right to the bin and right to town, no drying cost, that’s going to be really a big plus for our producers. Test weights seem to be running good and yields there again, too, are better than expected. We’re seeing a lot, in our immediate area we’re seeing a lot of 200 plus bushel corn and that’s really good. The dry areas we have over in Rock county and western Nobles county, they’re probably in that 150 to 180 bushel, but we’re going to see some really good yields here in Jackson county and Dickinson county in my estimation.”
Nesseth adds the concerns earlier with stalk quality haven’t turned out to be as serious as earlier feared…
“Overall we kind of escaped those high wind events and so the corn is standing relatively good.”
Area farmers are getting a break now with the rain. Forecasters say dry conditions will return Friday and will continue through most of next week.
