Iowa Lakes Laker Life campus ministry students spent their spring break on a mission trip to Chicago. This is a trip they have been doing for a number of years and Bret Fuelberth, Director of Choral Activities at Iowa Lakes Community College for the past 26 years and also an advisor for the Laker Life campus ministry, talks about the trip…
“Most students often if they travel south and they go some place warm and sit out on the beach, that type of thing. But we had some students, part of our campus ministry, Laker Life, who now this is in our sixteenth year, I think I’ve gone for sixteen years down to Chicago, and we go to Chicago and go there to serve. And so we serve at an after school ministry and in kind of an under served neighborhood there in Chicago, in Austin. And then also we serve at Breakthrough Ministries, which is a shelter for people experiencing homelessness.”
Fuelberth says this is a trip that he looks forward to every year…
“It’s one of the highlights of my year, is just being able to go and spend that spring break serving.”
Jazmine Besaw, who is an Associate of Arts major from Estherville, says it’s important to serve…
“It was just like a really great opportunity to like, get the chance to serve like a different community than we’re used to. And it’s just been a great opportunity to grow closer to God and like, spend that time with fellow college students with the same goal.”
Besaw says the trip is a rewarding experience…
“Just like, opened my eyes to the fact that, like, you don’t know what other people are going through. And when you actually talk to them and like, get the chance to know them, it really opens your eyes to like treating other people with kindness.”
This mission trip included 14 students as well as Fuelberth.
