SLHS Students Picket In Support Of Embattled Principal

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– About two hundred Spirit Lake High School students lined Hill Avenue in front of the school this (Wed.) morning in a show of support for their former Principal, Jed Sherman.

It comes on the heels of Tuesday’s vote by the School Board to accept Sherman’s resignation, which he says was made under duress. The board also put Sherman on administrative leave through the end of the school year, when his resignation is effective.

Danielle Durbala was among the students picketing to show support for Sherman, braving 10 degree temperatures. She told KUOO news they realize there are some things the school board can’t answer right now, but she says they’re hoping maybe they CAN get atleast a few questions answered to help shed a little more light on the situation.

School Board President Beth Will told KUOO news following Tuesday’s meeting that she couldn’t elaborate on the reasons behind the board’s action, saying it’s a personnel issue.

Sherman claims it stems from a difference in philosophy he has over how budget cuts should be made.

The group of student picketing had diminished by late morning. Many had gone to other locations to get something to eat and warm up, while a few went back to school. Others vowed not to go back to school, holding up signs and chanting “No Sherman, No School”.
