SL School Bd. Pushes Up Timeline For Deciding Mascot Issue

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– A decision over what to do about the Spirit Lake Indian mascot is being bumped up by several weeks.

Superintendent Tim Grieves announced this (Thursday) afternoon the school board has now decided to act on the matter at a special meeting set for 5:30 p.m. Monday, April 3rd at the Middle School Music Room. Grieves says the board will hold another public forum that evening prior to voting on the matter.

The board originally wasn’t going to act on the matter until May 8th, but Grieves says they no longer feel they can wait that long.

The issue has set off a storm of controversy among those who say the mascot is demeaning to native americans and those who say it’s meant to honor them, and that native americans played a major role in the history of the Iowa Great Lakes.
