(Spirit Lake)– It’s going to be awhile yet before the Spirit Lake city council adopts a revised vicious animal ordinance.
The council discussed the issue again Tuesday after reviewing new information from the City Attorney’s office, which included another draft ordinance with breed-specific language. Councilman Clyde Ihrke again sounded off on the breed-specific language, saying he believes any breed of dog can be trained to be vicious. Other council members agreed, adding they want more time to gather additional information and hear from the public.
In other business, the council heard an annual report from Alliant Energy; and they adopted an employee insurance program for the 2009 fiscal year. It represents a 7.2 percent increase over the last fiscal year. City Administrator Mark Stevens told the council they had budgeted for a 10 percent increase.
The council also awarded a contract on paving projects for 17th Street near Okoboji GM Toyota, an alley in the downtown area and for the library parking lot. The low bid for all three projects of 352,635-dollars was submitted by Diamond Concrete. It came in below the engineer’s estimate of 397,392-dollars.
