(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake city council Tuesday authorized an engineering study into drainage in the Center Lake area.
It comes on the heels of a letter from Lakes Regional Healthcare which experienced sewer back-ups on atleast two occasions during heavy rain events.
Beck Engineering of Spirit Lake will conduct the study at a cost of 9,250-dollars. They’ll report back with their findings and recommendations at a future meeting.
The council also approved a contract with an interim building inspector to fill in during the absence of Code Administrator Paul Hughes at a rate of 45-dollars an hour including travel. The vote was three-to-two with councilmen Kevin Bice and Jerry Harbst casting the dissenting votes.
The Spirit Lake city council set September 12th at 5:30 p.m. to award a bid on streetlighting projects along Highway 71 south, 41st street, Southern Glenn, second and third phases of Southern Hills and Country Estates Subdivisions. Prior to doing that, though, the council will meet with engineers that drew up the specifications. Councilman Steve Balm said he’s concerned about “over-lighting”, referring to all of the street lights that went up last year along Highway nine on the city’s west side.
The council tabled action on a proposal to reconstruct 34th Street west of Highway 71 based on concern from Balm who said he’d like to see that and other street projects prioritized.
The council approved the purchase of a new telephone system for city hall in the amount of 4,592-dollars. Councilman Jerry Harbst, who owns a company that sells phone systems, abstained.
