Reduced Speed Limit On Busy Street In Okoboji Is A Step Closer To Reality

September 10, 2026

(Okoboji)– A reduction in the speed limit on Sanborn Avenue in Okoboji is a step closer to reality. The city council Tuesday evening approved the first reading of a revised ordinance that would lower the present 35 mph limit to 25 mph. A resident who lives along the street spoke in favor of the reduction…

“Anything we can do to reduce that. There is, when we talk about the E-bikes, so much traffic there. Any money that we’re talking about other stuff, I would love to see a sidewalk or something going on around there.”

Councilman Jim Delperdang agreed, saying a sidewalk or recreational trail along Sanborn Avenue needs to be a priority…

“We have a bid-ready, engineered project but maybe there are other ways to approach this and tweak it, but I do think we need to be serious about this and get it done and get the funding. The trail board may follow along but I think we just need to get this done.”

The motion to approve the first consideration, however, came on a 3-2 vote, meaning it will need to come back to the council for subsequent considerations before any final adoption.

Council members say while a lower speed limit won’t get pedestrians off the street, a trail or sidewalk would.
