Rain, Warmer Temperatures Bring Ideal Growing Conditions

May 27, 2026

(Lakefield, Mn.)– Recent rains and now the much warmer conditions have combined to create ideal growing conditions across the region. Jim Nesseth of Extended Ag Services says it’s a perfect set up…

“We had early planting dates and we had great soil conditions when we planted and we had some cold snaps in there, we had a little crusting on some of that early planted corn after some rain but we seemed to work through that. We just got enough moisture to kind of really get that crop above ground and that stand established. I’ve done the drive bys on some of the fields and we’ve been in some of the fields also where they had a little hail damage here and there doing some stand counts. The herbicides seem to be working well and things have just really taken off now so the crop is growing fast.”

Nesseth adds that so far, at least, there are no signs of any pest concerns…

“We haven’t really seen anything with bean leaf beetle and the aphids, it’s just too soon for that. In corn we just haven’t seen any cut worm damage or anything like that, so things really look good. You just want to kind of pinch yourself and say this crop looks good right now and we’ve really got some great yield potential with these early planting dates and these good stands. Right now, things look very positive.”

Nesseth is urging producers to use extreme caution when applying post emergence herbicides. He says it’s especially important to read and follow label directions.
