Public Access Ordinance Revision In Okoboji Falls Short Of Final Adoption

October 14, 2026

(Okoboji)– An ordinance revision for public access docks in Okoboji fell short of final adoption at Tuesday evening’s Okoboji city council meeting. The council approved the first reading of the proposed revisions on a 3-2 vote.

The vote came after councilman Jim Hentges requested language that would ban swim rafts be eliminated from the ordinance…

“I know that’s not the best compromise but I think if we take the swim raft out, I think we got caught up in what everybody else was thinking. To me, who cares? I’m sorry, but it’s like I don’t have a problem with the swim rafts. We all thought maybe we were doing something right, but maybe we weren’t.”

The change was made after a resident questioned the rationale of banning the rafts during a public hearing held as part of Tuesday evening’s meeting.

Because the measure failed to get a super majority for passage last (Tues.) evening, it will now need to come back to the council for subsequent readings before final adoption can be considered.
