Okoboji Supt. Says District’s Finances Are In Good Shape

November 22, 2014

(Milford)– Okoboji schools Superintendent Bob Miller says patrons of that district shouldn’t be alarmed by a notification the district received from the Department of Education about overspending its authorized budget in the 2008 and 2009 fiscal years.

Miller says the overspending was actually based on a projection by the department, and that it didn’t actually take place.

Miller goes on to say the district saw a potential problem coming a couple years ago and started addressing it by cutting 360-thousand dollars from the budget by attrition and early retirement. Additional reductions were made in the current fiscal year through attrition, combining positions and other belt-tightening. As a result, Miller says Okoboji will actually end the current fiscal year with a positive unspent balance of over 200-thousand dollars.

Miller says that while all indications are positive, including a growth in enrollment this fall, they’ll continue to closely monitor the situation.

Okoboji was one of about 60 schools statewide to receive the notification from the Department of Education.
