Okoboji City Council Denies Tax Abatement Request; Adopts Revision To A-T-V Ordinance

April 13, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Okoboji)– The Okoboji City Council Tuesday evening denied a request for tax abatement to assist in the construction of a mixed use development just north of McDonalds. City Administrator Michael Meyers tells KUOO news it would have been the first time the city of Okoboji has offered such assistance and that there was concern over a possible precedent…

“It’s not something the city of Okoboji has historically done. We don’t necessarily have the levers in place at this exact second to offer tax abatement, so there was quite a bit of leg work that would have been needed to be done. And just sort of based on the precedent of what’s been set before, and it’s just not a road that the council was desiring to go down at this time.”

The proposed development includes a 26-unit apartment complex with four commercial units on the ground level. In other business, the council adopted an ordinance pertaining to all-terrain-vehicles. Meyers says it extends the hours of operation…

“And this would allow for 24 hour a day operation of A-T-V’s and U-T-V’s within the city of Okoboji. It’s important to know that this does not include golf carts. But upon publication which should be next Wednesday, A-T-V’s may operate within the city of Okoboji 24 hours a day, however they need to be operated with working headlights and tail lights and other safety features outlined in municipal code.”

The council also Tuesday evening set June 6th as the date for this year’s city-wide clean up day in Okoboji.
