(Milford)– The first in the latest series of public input meetings on what to do about the Dickinson county courthouse was held Monday evening in Milford.
Most of those who spoke called for a new building on a new site. No one who spoke was in favor of remodeling or restoring the present courthouse. Some again called on the supervisors to consider purchasing the Great Lakes Mall and convert it to a courthouse. There was also a call for the supervisors to quit purchasing property until a firm plan is in place.
A possible state mandate to merge counties was also brought up. For that reason, David Stein, a Milford attorney, said it’s important the county get something done to improve its facilities or it won’t stand a chance for being considered as a hub.
Doctor Vern Ryan of the Iowa State University Sociology Department, which is facilitating the meetings, cautioned the crowd about the survey process. He says even though a survey may indicate a common desire of the people, that it doesn’t guarantee passage of a bond issue.
