Local Ag Expert Says Any Hopes For Early Spring Planting Are Pretty Much Gone Now

(Lakefield, Mn.)– A local ag expert says hopes for early spring planting are pretty much dashed now thanks to the ongoing below normal temperatures. Jim Nesseth of Extended Ag Services in Lakefield tells KUOO news at least two of three conditions need to be met before even thinking about planting…
“One is soil conditions, one is soil temp, and one is calendar date. If you have two out of three, you know, then I think it’s maybe time to get things going. And I think we don’t have any of that right now.”
Even if things would suddenly warm up and stay there consistently, Nesseth says any planting would still be at least 10 days out for the most part before soil temperatures would be warm enough…
“So I think if we can get in the last part of April, first part of May, that will be ideal. We’re just going to have to have some good conditions to get us going there. Crop insurance dates as far as being eligible for re-plant clauses, you know, it’s April 11th on corn, so we’re past that, in good shape there; April 21st on the soybeans. It just doesn’t look with this forecast, Steve, that we’re going to get in field for probably the next, the earliest, probably 10 days.”
Nesseth says, however, we should still be in good shape if corn is in the ground in late April or early May.
