(Lakefield, Mn.)– With just a few exceptions, most of the corn and soybean planting throughout the region is complete. Jim Nesseth, of Extended Ag Services in Lakefield says most of the attention is now turning toward emergence…
“Some of the corn is struggling just a little bit in some spots where we have a little bit of wetter soils and just a little bit with these colder temperatures, we’re just going to have some uneven emergence. We’ve had a few of our producers that are out there and got the rotary hoe out and working up some of those areas. But overall I think the corn is coming up pretty good and the soybeans are coming up nicely.”
He says Tuesday’s high wind was a bit of a concern…
“We had a lot of real estate moving and some of the soybean fields where we’ve got some stands that were up and rolled, we’ve got finer textured soil and smoother soil surfaces, so we did have quite a bit of dirt moving on those fields. I think we’re going to be okay there, I don’t think the beans are big enough to get cut off.”
Nesseth says producers also need to be on the lookout for any signs of pests, especially cut worms, as the crops continue to emerge…
“We had some colder temperatures and so that’s where we could have some of those cutworms, some of the insects like grubs, those types of things. But yeah, we’ll go out there and look and you know the other thing I’m a little bit concerned about, we could use a little bit more moisture. Not exactly sure how these pre-emergent herbicides are going to be working so we’ve got to keep an eye on that, see what we have for weed establishment and we’re just going to have to deal with that with some post emergent spraying.”
Nesseth says predictions for warmer weather and rain in coming days are certainly welcome.
