Lightning Sparks House Fire

November 22, 2014

(Milford)– Authorities say lightning was the likely source of a house fire Tuesday evening in Milford.

Milford Fire Chief Gayle Clark says firefighters were called to the Dennis Dotson residence at 1203 Sixth Street shortly after 5:30 p.m. Clark says lightning struck a tree next to the residence. He says it appears the surge followed the electric service into the house and exited an upstairs outlet that had a cord plugged into it. Clark says a mattress on top of the cord started on fire. Firefighters removed the mattress and extinguished it. Clark says they then cut a hole in a wall to make sure the fire hadn’t spread to the interior.

He says the fire was discovered by the homeowner who had just returned home and discovered smoke.

No injuries were reported.

Milford firefighters were on the scene nearly an hour and-a-half.
