Hartley Man Injured In Train vs Semi Crash

November 22, 2014

(Ashton)– A Hartley man was injured today (Wednesday) when the trailer of a semi he was driving was struck by a train near Ashton.

The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office says 49-year-old Doug Popp of Hartley was driving a 1999 Freightliner and had stopped at the intersection of 260th Street and Highway 60 facing east waiting for oncoming traffic. Authorities say the semi’s trailer was sticking out into the railroad crossing when a northbound Union Pacific train broadsided it.

Popp was taken to the Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley where he was treated for minor injuries.

15-thousand dollars in damage was estimated to the semi and trailer, owned by Donald Irmitter of Hartley.

Popp was cited for commercial vehicle blocking a railroad crossing.

The crash took place shortly before 9:30 a.m.

The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on the scene by the Ashton Fire Department.
