(Okoboji)– The Good Neighbor Fund of Spirit Lake and Okoboji could use your help this holiday season. Spokesman Curt Johnson tells KUOO News as of last week they had raised 25-thousand dollars. Johnson says typically by this time of the year they’ve taken in between 40-thousand and 45-thousand dollars. The goal is 70-thousand dollars.
Johnson attributes the lagging donations to everything that’s going on in the community right now. He sites fundraising efforts by organizations such as the YMCA, schools, churches and so on.
Another factor, Johnson says, is that people who are assessed fines for various law enforcement infractions are no longer allowed to designate some of that money for the Good Neighbor Fund. That has made up a good share of the fund’s money in the past.
In the event they aren’t able to reach their goal, Johnson says the board will meet in March to analyze how much was taken in and pro-rate the funds to the organizations based on what they requested and what’s available.
