(Orleans)– A fundraising campaign for the rennovation of a historic shelter house in the lakes area has received a jump-start.
Joe Ulman is heading up the project to rennovate the Mini Wakan State Park shelter house that was built 75 years ago by the Civilian Conservation Corps on the north shore of Big Spirit Lake.
Ulman told the Spirit Lake Protective Association this past Saturday they’ve received a 100-thousand grant to help fund the project from the Okoboji Foundation.
Ulman says a preliminary estimate based on rough drawings is that 750-thousand dollars will be needed. He says they hope to have a more exact number once the drawings are converted to CAD.
Of the amount that will be needed, Ulman says he’s hoping 1/3 will be raised locally, with the state hopefully kicking in the remainder.
Jim Howard of the Spirit Lake Protective Association is organizing a concert during the Winter Games at the Sami Center which will serve as a major fundraiser for the project.
