Freak Accident On Hwy 18 Near Hartley Results In Minor Injuries

October 16, 2026

(Hartley)– Minor injuries were reported in a freak accident Thursday on Highway 18 on the east edge of Hartley.

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office says 48-year-old Jeremy Stueven of George was driving a 2006 Peterbilt tractor-trailer westbound when two tires came off the rear axle of the semi tractor. One of the tires struck an eastbound 2006 Mercury Mountaineer driven by 60-year-old Scott Wilson of Hartley. The impact caused the airbags in the SUV to deploy.

A passenger in that vehicle, 60-year-old Kimberly Wilson of Hartley, was checked over on the scene by EMT’s and was released.

Authorities say the SUV was totaled.

An accident report says it isn’t known why the lug nuts fell off the semi. The mishap took place shortly after 11:30 am.
