(Superior)– A rural Spirit Lake family is homeless going into the holiday season after a fire destroyed their home Monday evening.
Superior Fire Chief Melvin Wernimont tells KUOO news firefighters were called to the Lon and Jody Lindsay residence at 1230 290th Avenue shortly before 7:00 p.m. Wernimont says portion of the home and the garage were already engulfed when firefighters arrived. At that point Wernimont says the Terril and Spirit Lake Fire Departments were called to help haul water.
No one was home at the time, and no injuries were reported. Wernimont says the Lindsays had gone into town for a basketball game. The blaze was discovered by a neighbor who called 911.
The home is a total loss.
A possible cause hasn’t been determined yet. Wernimont says a representative of the State Fire Marshall’s Office is expected on the scene today (Tues.).
Firefighters were on the scene until about 2:00 this (Tues.) morning keeping an eye out for flare-ups.
The Spirit Lake Police Department, Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office and Dickinson County Emergency Management assisted on the scene. An ambulance from Lakes Regional Healthcare also stood by as a precaution.
Relief funds for the Lindsays have been established at the State Bank and First Bank and Trust, both in Spirit Lake.
