(Estherville)– The Estherville City Council Monday approved a motion expressing their intent to appoint whoever wins Tuesday’s Ward 4 City Council seat to also fill out the remainder of Ann Goebel’s term, which expires at the end of this year. That same person would then assume a full term beginning January 1st. Goebel resigned from her seat effective November 1st after moving to another area of the city. City Administrator Penny Clayton recommended the council take that action…
“I think it might be prudent to announce that we would like to do it by appointment and publish that notice saying we’d like to do an appointment to fill a vacancy and then appoint whomever is elected. There’s only one candidate on the ballot and I’ve talked to him and he would be willing to then be appointed on November 17 if the council wants to proceed that way. It says in the code that we need to fill, if we’re going to fill by appointment, we have to do it within 60 days of the vacancy.”
The person who is successfully elected will be sworn in to fill the interim of the term at the November 17th city council meeting, and will be sworn in to serve the full term the first of the year.
