(Emmetsburg)– A longstanding event will take place over the 4th of July weekend in Emmetsburg. Mark Evans, President of the Emmetsburg Kiwanis, says they’ll be holding the 55th annual Flight Breakfast Sunday, July 5th, at the Emmetsburg Airport…
“Our serving times are from 7:00 am to 12:30 pm and we serve pancakes, omelets, sausage and drink. Our adult price is $10.00; kids 6-12 is $5.00; kids under 6 are free; and any of our pilots that fly in eat for free. They’re spending money on fuel for airplanes any way, so that’s the least we can do is to at least feed the pilots. Any other people that come with them we charge. And then we have the community able to go out and look at these planes. People fly in and we get them from all over so it’s kind of nice.”
Evans says they’re hoping to surpass last year’s event, which in itself was huge success…
“Last year we served over 600 people in about a five and-a-half hour period and had about 40 planes on the ground, not at all one time but just filtering in and out through the five hour period. It was really exciting. The community really got excited about it and it’s just a fun day.”
Evans says depending upon availability, this year’s event will once again feature something special…
“We invite them every year, Mercy Air Care comes out of Mason City. They are an on duty crew, so they have accepted the invitation. I talked with the supervisor here the other day and they’re hopeful that it’s a quiet morning for them so they can attend. The public really enjoys that too because sometimes you don’t get to see the Mercy Air Care helicopter up close, and they’re more than happy to talk about it. When we’ve had them there, the community is just, yeah, they’re overwhelmed with the amount of equipment that’s on board and just the size. You just see this bird, you know, flying by and their usually pretty good elevation but it’s really neat up close. I’ve even had a chance to look at it a couple times and it amazes me what they’ve got onboard.”
Evans says the Flight Breakfast is a major fundraiser each year for the Emmetsburg Kiwanis.
