(Emmetsburg)– The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has scheduled a public meeting for 1:30 p.m. this coming Wednesday, July 26th, to talk about water quality in Five Island Lake. The meeting will be held in the Auditorium at the Emmetsburg campus of Iowa Lakes Community College.
Chris Van Gorp of the DNR says they’ll discuss the problems with the lake, present suggestions on how the community can work for cleaner water, and present a draft plan on how to improve Five Island Lake’s water quality. Van Gorp says they’ll receive public comments regarding that proposed plan at Wednesday’s meeting. They will then send the proposed plan to the U-S Environmental Protection Agency for approval.
Van Gorp says the water quality problems at Five Island Lake are similar to those in other lakes in the region–high levels of algae and turbidity.
The DNR will accept written comments on the draft plan through August 18th.
