Cutting Individual Income Taxes To Be Major Priority In Iowa Legislature This Session

January 10, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Des Moines)– The 2022 Iowa Legislative session gets underway today (Mon.) at the statehouse in Des Moines. Republicans control both the House and Senate and have already indicated cutting individual income taxes will be their top priority. House Speaker Pro-Tem John Wills of Spirit Lake told news partner KTIV it’s important Iowa does that to remain competitive with other states…

“Right now we’re over-collecting taxes. I’m not a believer in expanding spending because we have extra money. Right now we are over-collecting and may just as well send that money back to the taxpayer to make sure that they’re benefitting from that over-collection.”

When it comes to any long term reduction in taxes, Wills says they would need to account for any reduction in state revenue in any given year by budgeting accordingly.

Wills says doing away with the state income tax altogether is something that needs to be explored and that it could be done without hurting things such as education and medicare…

“I’m not foolish enough to believe that we can just go to zero income tax and that everything’s going to be fine. We can’t. We have to do this in a wise way. But I believe that also that if a person has an extra 100 dollars in their paycheck they’re going to probably spend that money. That means that money, instead of income tax, is going to come into the revenue, the state’s revenue, in the form of sales tax. And so I believe that we’re still going to get that money to come in, it’s just a matter of where it comes into the revenue coffers at.”

That’s State Representative John Wills of Spirit Lake who also serves as House Speaker Pro-Tem.
