Combine Fire Near Estherville Injures Three

November 22, 2014

(Estherville)– Three people were injured in a combine fire Wednesday near Estherville.

Estherville Fire Chief Randy Cody says crews were called to a field just southwest of Riverview Golf Course around 2:30 p.m. He says they arrived to find a combine on fire. Cody adds they had to extinguish a fire that had spread from the combine to the surrounding field.

The combine was being operated by Bob Schacherer of rural Estherville who uses a lift to get in and out of it. Cody says two people had pulled Schacherer out of the cab by the time officials arrived. All three suffered burns and were taken to Avera Holy Family Hospital in Estherville. Schacherer was transferred by helicopter to a Sioux Falls hospital.

Cody believes the blaze was caused by a bad bearing in the combine.

Firefighters were on the scene about two hours.
