Chain Reaction Crash Sends 5-Year-Old To Hospital

(Spencer)– A four-vehicle chain reaction crash Saturday on Highway 18 in Clay county sent a child to the hospital to be checked over for possible injuries.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office says 52-year-old Roy Erno of Hartley was driving a 2003 Subaru eastbound when he suddenly stepped on the brakes to avoid colliding with two other vehicles that were also braking for a vehicle that was turning into a residence.

Authorities say 20-year-old John Bendlin of Spencer, who was driving a 2000 Harley Davidson motorcycle, then came upon the scene. Deputies say Bendlin attempted to brak hard to avoid colliding with the vehicle driven by Erno, but collided with its bumper.

Authorities say 26-year-old Mark Klein of Sheldon, who was driving a 2001 Chevrolet truck eastbound on Highway 18 came upon the scene and hit his brakes to avoid the accident when he was rearended by a 2008 Toyota Tundra truck driven by 20-year-old Ryan Williamson of Ruthven.

A five-year-old girl who was possibly injured was taken by ambulance to Spencer Hospital. No other injuries were reported.

50 dollars in damage was estimated to the vehicle driven by Erno; the truck driven by Klein sustained an estimated 500-dollars in damage; and damage to Williamson’s truck was estimated at 2,500-dollars. No damage was reported to the motorcycle driven by Bendlin.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Spencer ambulance, Everly Fire and Rescue, Spencer Hospital and the Clay County Sheriff’s Office.
