Car Carrier Flips Over On Highway Nine In SL

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– A Burt, Iowa man escaped injury this (Fri.) afternoon when a car carrier he was driving flipped over on Highway nine in Spirit Lake.

Spirit Lake police say 28-year-old Christopher Hayes was driving a 2002 Ford F450 pulling a car carrier with two vehicles on it. Authorities say Hayes was turning off Hudson Avenue to go east on Highway Nine when the load shifted, causing the truck and carrier to flip on its side.

10-thousand dollars in damage was estimated to the truck; the carrier sustained an estimated 250-dollars in damage; with five thousand dollars in damage estimated to each vehicle on the carrier–a 2004 GMC Envoy and a 2004 Ford F150.

The truck, carrier and the two vehicles that were on it are all owned by Motor Inn.

The Spirit Lake Fire Department and Dickinson County Emergency Management stood by on the scene as the truck leaked an estimated five to 10 gallons of diesel fuel. A boom and some dry towels were used to sop up the fuel.

The mishap took place around 12:35 p.m. The road had to be closed for about 45 minutes while crews worked to upright the vehicles and clean up the mess.

In addition to the Spirit Lake Fire Department and Emergency Management, Spirit Lake Police were also assisted on the scene by the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities were on the scene about three hours.
